The choice of the carousel seems almost random. Salinger's Holden Caulfield wanders the entire city, the way Leopold Bloom wanders Joyce's Dublin. But it is here, watching Phoebe ride the carousel in the rain and reach for the gold ring, that Holden finds a fleeting moment of happiness.
