89 E 42nd St, Midtown
In the 1970s, Penn Central Railroad planned to build a skyscraper above Grand Central Terminal, threatening its iconic Beaux-Arts facade. Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis became the public face of the campaign to save it, famously declaring that a great city deserves great buildings. Her advocacy helped bring the case to the Supreme Court, which ruled in 1978 to protect the terminal, a landmark victory for historic preservation in America.
